Aliwal North lies on a ford near the confluence of the Gariep (formerly Orange) and the Kraai (crow) Rivers. Today, it is a farming town and an entry point for the higher climes of the southern Drakensberg. Back in the mid-19th Century, however, Aliwal North was an important frontier town, a stop-over for travellers heading to the Transvaal and points beyond. Then came the discovery of the diamond fields and Aliwal North flourished as a supply town and staging post for the thousands of prospectors and businesses that followed them. During the Anglo Boer War, it was mostly occupied by the Boer forces until the British took control and established a concentration camp for Boer women and children here.

Aliwal North has a spa with two indoor mineral pools, fed by hot springs in the area. The Islands is a development near the spa, where nearly 30 species of waterfowl have been spotted. The Concentration Camp Garden and Garden of Remembrance are worth a visit, as are the excellent Roman Catholic and St Paulís Church.
