Beaufort West
The capital of the Central Karoo, also referred to as the 'Oasis of the Karoo', Beaufort West is on the N1 at the foot of the Nuweveld Mountains. (24-hour petrol and banking facilities are available.)

Major Attractions:
Anglican Church. (1854) 21 Donkin Str.
Blockhouse. At the railway bridge, the blockhouse was built during the Anglo-Boer War in 1901 to guard the rail.

Old Jacob's House. 111 Bird Str. Oldest house in the town, built in the 1820s.
Old Mission Church. (1872) Depicts the town's history and fashions from the past.
Old Town Hall (1867). The first town hall of the first municipality in South Africa. Exhibitions focus on Beaufort West's history and pioneering heart- transplant surgeon, Christiaan Barnard.
Parsonage/Barnard House. Birthplace and boyhood home of Professor Christiaan Barnard.

Voortrekker Park. Commemorates the pioneers of Beaufort West who embarked on the Great Trek into the interior.

Karoo National Park. Just north of Beaufort West, the park was proclaimed in 1979 to conserve the unique vegetation, animal and birdlife and the fossil treasures of the Central Karoo. It is now home to the endangered black rhino and riverine rabbit.
Meiringspoort. A spectacular 20km river gorge links the Beaufort West district to the Klein Karoo.
