Tourist Routes/ Meanders
The African Ivory Route

Situated on the Mogul River, about 60 kilometres from the Botswana border, this tranquil but prosperous town with a farm in the middle of it, is now home to about 20 000 people. Ellisras is well-known for its coal mining industry as 55% of the country's coal reserves can be found in the Ellisras region. Iscor's Grootegeluk opencast coal mine is the largest mine of its kind in South Africa, providing Iscor with high grade metallurgical coal for iron and steel production. This in turn led to the development of Escom's Matimba Power Station, the largest dry-cooled power station in the world. The town planning was done in such a way that almost no big trees were cut down. Houses and roads were designed to keep much of the Bush veld untouched. Ellisras is a hunting mecca and a lot of the tourism activities revolve around game-related activies such as game auctions and safaris. The mild winter months, with moderate summer evenings, make this a popular venue for camping and stargazing.
Spectacular sunsets, soothing nocturnal sounds, birdsong and abundant game amidst the natural beauty of the Bush veld ensures a pleasant visit.
