George, nestling below the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains is the sixth oldest town in South Africa. It is situated in the beautiful Western Cape Province and is the Capital of the Southern Cape. The town's central position between Cape Town (420 km) and Port Elizabeth (320 km) and its close proximity to other towns of the Garden Route with road, air and rail links to all the important centres in the country, has resulted in George becoming a major distribution, education and medical centre.

George has changed its image from a previously industrial growth point to a major holiday accommodation centre. The sophisticated infrastructure with banks, conference facilities, businesses, major shopping chains, transport systems, doctors and hospitals as well as educational and sporting facilities, are now utilized for the convenience and comfort of visitors to the area.

George is the only city in the Garden Route that can offer a full complement of accommodation of over 5200 beds, catering for every taste and pocket. The fact that the business centre of George is situated about eight kilometres from the coast has favourably resulted in tariffs generally being lower than at the coast, thus making it an excellent value for money holiday base.

The peaceful, safe country atmosphere of the town, combined with above average quality accommodation, has transformed the city into an accommodation giant in the Western Cape.

The area consists of a remarkable blending of mountains, rivers, indigenous and cultivated forests, colourful shrubs and wild flowers, glorious beaches and rich farmlands. No wonder the Hottentots, who inhabited the district, named the area OUTENIQUA - 'man laden with honey' - which it still is. This makes it ideal from where to explore the area's many variant and diverse scenic wonders.

Surf and rock angling is very popular along this coast line and Stumpnose, Cob, Blackfish (Galjoen) and Shad are but a few to be found in these waters. Rods and reels are permitted along the Touw River and at Island Lake. Angling is not permitted at Langvlei, Rondevlei or along most of the Serpentine River. No netting of any kind is permitted.

This is allowed within demarcated areas only, on Island Lake and Swartvlei. Launching at Swartvlei is through privately owned holiday resorts only. On Swartvlei estuary, the municipal slipway on Kingfisher drive may also be used.

Yachting and boardsailing is allowed on Island Lake and Swartvlei. The Yacht Club is situated on the southern bank of the Island Lake.

This is allowed on Swartvlei, Island Lake, Groenvlei and the Touw River. Canoes can be hired from the National Parks Board at Wilderness Rest Camp as well as from the Fairy Knowe Hotel. Alternately the George Dam also offers canoeing, (044) 863 9111.

If you have your bike with you, there is no better way to see the area.
