Hout Bay
Tourist Information:
Hout Bay ('Wood Bay') was named after the thick forest that once grew along the mountain's south- facing slopes. Although strong ties with the sea have evolved through the expanding fishing industry, the backdrop of the Table Mountain System and its associated flora and fauna have firmly cemented Hout Bay's terrestrial link. There is a colourful and entertaining fishing harbour, a picturesque village filled with arts and crafts, a wide, sandy beach with safe bathing, and many mountain trails.

Major Attractions:
Africa Nova: Features potato-print fabrics and glorious furnishings. Tel 790 4454.
Chapman's Peak Drive: A cliffside drive perched 600m above the surf pounding the rocks below and offering views of unsurpassed beauty, this is rated among the world's most spectacular drives.
Duiker Island: Opposite The Sentinel in HoutBay, Duiker Island is a seal and seabird sanctuary. During summer, several thousand Cape Fur Seals - along with the rare Black Cormorant - lollop leisurely among the kelp beds. Launch operators visit the island regularly.

Hout Bay Crafts Ceramics, fine arts, hand-painted cloths and hand knits. Craft market on Village Green. Open Sundays. Tel 790 3474.

Hout Bay Harbour and Sentinel: A traditional, working harbour with rustic fishing boats and the eternal buzz of fishermen at work, seafood outlets, round-the-bay trips to the nearby seal colony, restaurants, shell, gift and antique shops, and a world famous harbourfront emporium. The Sentinel is the 800m mountain towering over the harbour.

Hout Bay Museum: St Andrews Rd. Activities of the valley and its people - from forestry to fishing and mining, is relived. Tel 790 3270 Fax 790 4207.

Mariner's Wharf: South Africa's first harbourfront emporium of live lobster and fish markets, seafood bistros and restaurants, shell, souvenir, art and nautical shops, an old wine and liquor store, and a pearl-in-an-oyster outlet. Tel 790 1100.

SA Fisheries Museum: Hout Bay Harbour. A meeting place for everyone interested in the sea and its resources.
World of Birds: Valley Rd. One of the largest birdparks in the world, with unique, 'walk through', landscaped aviaries. Tel 790 2730/790 4838.

The Great Outdoors:
Angling: Hout Bay's waters are renowned for yellowfin, longfin tuna, broadbill swordfish and marlin angling. Contact: Big Game Fishing Safaris, tel 64 2203; Tight Line Fishing Charters, tel Nick Jones 082 447 6550. Sunset cruises and special charters on request.
Hiking: For guided walks on Hout Bay's mountains, tel 790 3270.

Horseriding: The Riding Centre, tel 790 5286.
Hout Bay Beach: The steep slopes of the Sentinel and Chapman's Peak guard the beach on either side with the village of Hout Bay hidden among the milkwood trees. The 1km beach is a popular venue for windsurfers, hobie cats, paddleskiers and surfers and is ideal for walking. Lucky visitors might catch fishermen 'trekking', an age-old fishing method whereby heavy nets are hauled to the shore.

Seal Island Cruises: Drumbeat Charters (see p41), telefax 438 9208/790 4859, and Circe Launches, tel 790 1040, run scenic trips from Hout Bay Harbour to view the seals on Duiker Island.
