The Klein Karoo is an oasis-like setting in a fertile valley cupped by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges, and originated as a settlement along the Grobbelaars Rivers which meanders southwards from the Swartberg, providing fertile soil and water for irrigation. Crops such as lucerne, tobacco, fruit, grapes and grains grow here in abundance.

Outdshoorn is a town with the most sunny days per year in the whole country, 365 sunshine days, 4 summers and sunny, dry winters await the visitor to the Klein Karoo. Shielded from the coastal belt by the mountain ranges the Klein Karoo also enjoys many windless days.

Oudtshoorn is situated on the edge of the Garden Route, between the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountain Passes. Oudtshoorn is also a wonderful exciting halfway stopover when traveling between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, with the coastal town of George about 56 km's away.

Oudtshoorn is spread along both banks of the Grobbelaars River, a tributary of the Elephant's River, and its fertile valleys are encompassed by the Swartberg Mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south.

One of South Africa's eight wine regions, the Klein Karoo is large in area but small in production and these wines are classed with the best in the South African Context. Visit numerous estates on the Klein Karoo Wine Route from Montagu in the West to Meiringspoort in the East.

First class hotels, lodges, inns and guesthouses await the visitor. Enjoy the relaxed, friendly, hospitable atmosphere offered in town or at various surrounding farms. Experience the joy of life in the country and breathe in the healthy, unpolluted air. Taste the art of the fine local wines and dine on the excellent cuisine of restaurateurs from a five course meal which could include Ostrich, to a delightful lighter meal, all exquisitely available to satisfy every taste.

ATTRACTIONS

The Cango Caves, one of the world's great natural wonders, provide a magical journey through massive caverns and fascinating limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colours. Regular guided tours are offered daily.

Warm, dry summers and sunny winter days make it the ideal breeding ground for the world's biggest bird, the Ostrich. Before the arrival of the first settlers Ostrich roamed wild in this area. Amid the current 400 Ostrich farms surrounding the town, three have distinguished themselves worthy to be named 'show farms'. Interact with this exotic bird species, the largest in the world. For the more adventurous take an ostrich ride.

A Wildlife Ranch with more than 300 animals like crocodiles, cheetahs and many more to see. Gaze with awe at slithering reptile species from all over the world. Imagine more than 400 crocodiles and alligators in their prehistoric unattractiveness. Be photographed cuddling a cheetah, the fastest animal on land.

A Butterfly Show Farm and Angora Rabbit Show Farm, are also amongst the many interesting and rare places to visit.

There are several historical buildings and monuments to see, like the fascinating architecture of the old Ostrich Palaces established during the fashionable feather boom of the 1880's, during which Oudtshoorn became the undisputed Ostrich Capital of the world. Many of these buildings have been conserved to this day as museums, such as the C.P.Nel museum designed by Charles Bullock and built in 1906, as well as guesthouses and dwellings for the discerning. Local arts and crafts as well as a host of ostrich products are some of the wonderful things on offer in the many shops. (Left: C.P. Nel Museum).

The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival is the annual gathering in March/April of more than one hundred thousand lovers of various arts, for a week of dancing, film, cabaret, classical music, comedy, contemporary music, open air concerts, plays, literary art and poetry. This is a momentous event currently enjoying international sponsorship.

THINGS TO DO:
Day Trips in and around Oudtshoorn

Calitzdorp Spa is the ideal resort for relaxing and having fun! It's natural hot spring baths will soothe the stress of modern living. The water contains many minerals with iron and manganese in abundance and is famous for its natural healing waters. The rejuvenating mineral water bubbles up from Mother Earth right here in the Klein Karoo.

The Swartberg pass is one of the most sensational drives in Southern Africa and a national monument. It is the masterpiece of a brilliant road engineer, Thomas Bain, and dates from the 1880's. Relive the daring with a 30 minute drive on the original route which took five years to complete.

Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the surrounding Swartberg, Outeniqua and Kamanassie mountain ranges. Waterfalls abound and the visitor is fortunate to safely visit two spectacular examples at Rust en Vrede and Meiringspoort falls.

The Eco-tourist and those who thrive on the outdoor life will find a large selection of challenging opportunities. Hiking and biking trails are in abundance. Oudtshoorn is the hub of the region for the sport enthusiast, offering a challenging modern 18 hole golf course with full amenities and squash courts. Also bowls, athletics, tennis, cricket, rugby, Olympic standard swimming pools, motorsport, miniature aircraft and much more.
