Tourist Information:
Named after Governor Simon van der Stel in 1687, Simon's Town was used by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as its winter anchorage from 1743 until the British occupation in 1795. It was the Royal Navy's South Atlantic Base from 1814 until the handover to the South African Navy in 1957. The town's naval atmosphere and Historic Mile are great attractions to visitors. In 1795, British troops landed here before the battle of Muizenberg during the First British Occupation.

Major Attractions:
Able Seaman Just Nuisance: A statue of the famous dog and sailors' friend stands in Jubilee Square.
Admiralty House: Built in the late 1720s.
SA Naval Museum: West Dockyard, Court Rd. The historic mast house includes lifesize minesweeper and submarine dioramas and a large collection of ship models and naval relics. Tel 787 4635.

Scratch Patch, Mineral World and Topstones: Dido Valley Rd. Visitors can enjoy 'digging' through thousands of polished gemstones. Tel 786 2020. Fax 786 2502.
Simon's Town Country Club: Tel 786 1233.
Simon's Town Museum: The Residency, Court Rd. Built for the Dutch Governor in 1777, the museum has its own ghost, original slave quarters and a mystery mural. It also replicates the Royal Naval Pub. Tel 786 3046.

Stempastorie Museum: 2 Church Str. The score of Die Stem was written in the former Dutch Reformed Church rectory. It now contains emblems, flags and coats of arms from South Africa's political history. Tel 786 3226.

Warrior Toy Museum: The St George's Str. A permanent exhibition of Dinky toys, dolls, Meccano, model cars, boats, trains, etc. Tel 786 1395.

The Great Outdoors:
Beaches: Boulders Beach: A series of nooks and coves tucked in among towering boulders offers shelter from the wind and sun. Safe swimming for children and ideal for inexperienced snorkellers, Boulders is one of only two mainland Jackass Penguin breeding colonies in the world. Seaforth Beach: Safe swimming, protection from the southeaster, a wooden raft and a waterslide make this an ideal venue for young families. Turn off Main Rd down Seaforth Rd after passing the navy block on the left.
